Gartner Inc., a market research firm, made a prediction that by 2020 more than 250 million cars will be interconnected through a wireless network infrastructure.
In the next five years, vehicles equipped with wireless capability will dominate the roads and will be a major contributor to the Internet of Things (IoT), according to Gartner.
Gartner's forecast clams that by 2015 there will be more than 4.9 billion interconnected things and will reach as much as 25 billion by the end of 2020.
The increase in car connectivity technology is the by-product of the increasing bandwidth in wireless network infrastructure due to the rising demands for mobile access from smartphones and tablets, according to Computer World.
Car connectivity has also created several regulations including "automatic accident reports," such as eCall. This is a European initiative that provides rapid assistance to motorist who has encountered an accident along the road.
Several government regulations are also aimed at vehicle-to-vehicle communication in order to reduce road accidents.
Gartner analyst Hines shared that many major car manufacturers are already integrating their products with wireless connectivity protocols and this approach is also expanding to luxury and premium models.
The interconnectivity of cars will also open several possible markets for car ownership along with autonomous cars and mobile car app.
Hines added, "The increased consumption and creation of digital content within the vehicle will drive the need for more sophisticated infotainment systems, creating opportunities for application processor, graphics accelerators, displays and human-machine interface technologies."
In order to bring this vision to life, several companies are already starting to put up their own IoT infrastructure in order to fully integrate what many analysts considers to be the technology of the future.
