"Sandman" is going to continue with a new screenwriter but a director and a new lead star is yet to be named.
The live-action adaptation of "Sandman" has hit a roadblock, following Joseph Gordon-Levitt's departure from the project. Gordon-Levitt said that he was pleased with the progress that he and Gaiman were making until the recent change in ownership of the material.
In his official Facebook page, he said that he left the project due to creative differences. "Sandman's" writer, Neil Gaiman, hopes to work with him again in the future,
New Line Studios recently took over the development of all Vertigo Comics franchises from Warner Bros. A day before Gordon-Levitt's announcement, the studio tapped "Final Destination 5" writer Eric Hesserling to write the screenplay. Hesserling replaces Jack Thorne, chosen for the same role by Gordon-Levitt, The Guardian reported.
On his way out, the actor praised his co-workers, particularly Gaiman, whom he thanked for "generous insights and masterful works." The two appears to be in good terms as Gaiman returned the favor calling Gordon-Levitt "special."
Fans of the two hope that both will get to work together on another project. Gaiman echoed the same sentiment and said that he would love to work with the actor some more.
Gaiman clarified on twitter that he never owned the distribution or commercial rights to "Sandman." He said that when he wrote "Sandman" twenty six years ago, his concern was to write its 2,500 pages without considering that it will be made into a film years later.

Meanwhile, Gordon-Levitt is developing an R-rated musical with Channing Tatum and is set to star in a film about the origins of the KKK for Amazon called "K Troop," Collider reported.
The "Sandman" series centers around the character named Morpheus, the Lord of the Dreams. The comic book ran between 1989 and 1996 spanning volumes. Throughout the late 1990s, the film adaptation of the comic was periodically planned by Warner Bros. Roger Avary was originally assigned to direct the film.
