The NBA free agency rumors continue and still at the center is Kevin Durant.
While the former NBA MVP continues to reiterate that he has yet to decide on his destination, the speculation continues.
One team that needs to make a reality check on their chances are the Houston Rockets. This was emphasized by their own team blog, Space City Scoop.
"If Durant brought his talents to Clutch City, there is a high possibility that Houston's team chemistry would be at its worst," SCS mentioned. "Everyone wants to be Michael Jackson, but no one wants to sacrifice to become Jermaine Jackson."
It's not so much that the Houston Rockets are a very bad team, but there are too many other options with much less issues. There is the uncertainty of Dwight Howard's situation to address. The Rockets main draw for KD is that he would be joining two stars. If it's only James Harden remaining, even if they are friends and former teammates, KD may look elsewhere. Not to mention Harden is not exactly a model teammate of late.
Now there are rumors that Durant may want "his own team." This was quoted from Joel Meyers, a New Orleans Pelicans announcer who has a solid reputation (meaning, his opinion would not easily be dismissed). He places that on the line with this quote.
"I made some calls over the weekend," Meyers said. "If they don't, I'm told if they don't at least get to the NBA Finals, Durant's gone. Simple as that. And to the point where he may want his own team."
This gave hope to the Lakers fans, as they would be the team who could give a clean slate for KD, with young, talented stars and even a vacant coaching seat (on the assumption that Byron Scott would be fired at season's end).
Durant would be placed on the brightest spotlight in the league and would be the star to replace Kobe Bryant.
Durant has recently disputed Meyers' allegations, via ESPN.
"To me, it doesn't [make sense]," Durant said on leaving OKC if they don't reach the Finals. "You put too much pressure on everybody if you say something like that. Especially my teammates and the organization. They don't deserve that. So I never said that, I never thought that."
Still, this is a complete turnaround from the rumors that KD would rather join the Warriors-a team that would not be Kevin Durant's "own," but would definitely give him the best chance of winning a title.
The rumors have gone to both extremes which leads to the conclusion that nothing is really certain. The Lakers would take that, rather than get written off this early.
