Malaysia Airlines is the latest victim of the hacker group Lizard Squad. The airline company's website was defaced by the hacker group and left a message on its homepage saying "404 - Plane Not Found," probably as a reference to the lost Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 which is yet to be found until now.
On the hacked webpage, a troubling reference has baffled many security experts when the Lizard Squad mentioned "Hacked by LIZARD SQUAD - OFFICIAL CYBER CALIPHATE." The Cyber Caliphate is another hacker group which is known to have connections to the Islamist rebel group ISIS.
An image of a lizard wearing a top hat and a monocle instead of the usual flight timetable greeted visitors of the Malaysia Airlines website. Malaysia Airlines was quick to assure its customers that the vandalism done to its website was simply a redirection rather than a destructive attack, The Register reported.
After the defacement of the Malaysia Airlines website, the Lizard Squad posted a message on Twitter saying, "Going to dump some loot found on malaysiaairlines.com servers soon."
The message terrified many of the airline's customers fearing that their personal information might be in jeopardy.
The Malaysia Airlines released an official statement explaining that the Lizard Squad took control of its DNS and in turn redirect its visitors to an alternate website. The airline company added that its website was not hacked and the attack was just a temporary glitch which will not affect its client's flight bookings. The company assured its customers that their data and servers remains secured.
After the attack, Malaysia Airlines redirects its customers into a lite version of its website while working to restore into its main website.
The Lizard Squad is an infamous hacker group that cemented its notoriety when it hacked the PlayStation and Xbox Live network on Christmas season. The group's attitude and hacking ethics closely resembles that of LulzSec.
