Good news awaits all "Descendants of the Sun" fans, as it has been reported that a spin-off movie could be on the cards. The series' production company has discussed the possibility of a movie adaptation of the mega-hit series.
With the constantly increasing viewership of the KBS series both in China and Korea, talks about a possible movie adaptation are quietly making the rounds online. The ongoing hit drama series stars Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-Kyo.
On April 7, Thursday, a representative of NEW, the production company behind "Descendants of the Sun," revealed that they are receiving a lot of inquiries on remakes and optional publication rights. Thus, the representative said that the company has been in negotiation with international companies.
"[So] It is true that we have negotiated with several companies," Naven TV quoted the representative as saying.
Although the representative is keen to clarify that the company is keeping all options open, NEW teases fans worldwide by saying that "Descendants of the Sun's" new format could be a movie adaptation, or it may be a new drama with a different setting.
However, the drama's producer previously admitted that they will not have a second season of the series since it is impossible to gather the main cast again due to their conflicting schedules. That said, some fans were quick to point out that any type of production with the original cast is not possible.
Nonetheless, another new report came saying that the movie adaptation will be a Chinese remake. Although no timeline has been given yet, the report claim that NEW is in search of production companies with which to do the international co-production, Drama Beans has learned.
While plans are supposedly in motion for the Chinese remake, the production company is seemingly hoping to have the series remade in other countries as well, considering that the mega-hit drama is nearing the end of its run.
As of press time, "Descendants of the Sun" is enjoying high popularity in China, amassing more than 2.1 billion views on the Chinese video streaming platform, iQiyi.
