Indie survival game "Rust" has now turned half of its character population into females, without the consent of the players with the new update that Facepunch Studios introduced recently. The players cannot change the gender of their characters and it has been locked to their SteamIDs.
Last year, the studios' lead developer Garry Newman announced on its official developer blog that they might be introducing female player models in the game. Recently, the game developers have done so and they are changing the genders of the characters in a random way.
The SteamIDs will be the basis of the character's gender, so if the character will be assigned as a female, it will stay that way until the developers change their minds. Half of the characters will stay male, so if players find out their characters' gender did not change, then they are safe. It also went both ways as well since some female characters also changed into male characters at random.
Newman explained in another announcement on the game's official developer blog the reason why they assigned gender instead of letting players choose. It was a direct response to what he felt about character creation in other games.
Some might not play the game anymore due to their actions, but technically half of the game's population was already feeling awkward with their characters' previous genders. To make it fair for other players, they decided that it will now be assigned through SteamIDs, he added. The game studio has no plans to make gender assignment or any other randomized features as options for the game.
The player models are still being worked on by Newman, and he will be continuing to add variations in the coming weeks. Players might get the chance to get their characters' faces changed in the near future.
In other news, there were tons of changes and fixes done to the game with the new update. The game developers introduced ceiling light improvements, armor fixes, medical fixes, grenade improvement, grass changes, and much more. The armor fix, in particular, was much needed, since the previous version had issues and a lot of players complained.
