A 57-year-old Beijing man is now detained for 10 days, thanks a video that went viral on Chinese social media.
The man, Li, was filmed beating a beating a courier in the Dongcheng District of Beijing after the electric tricycle of the delivery man hit his car, reported China Daily. The angry man is seen in a video, which was forwarded 45,000 times on Sina Weibo and WeChat Moments and elicited 16,000 comments, slapping the face of the courier six times while they were on the middle of the road.
Feng, the courier, said sorry for the accident and offered to pay the car owner 400 yuan ($61.70) for the damage he caused. He did not attempt to evade the slaps or hit back the angry driver.
But SF Express, the employer of Feng, said after it reported the incident to authorities, it would file charges against Li. In a statement, SF Express said, “Given the fact that the other party hit the courier repeatedly in an extremely violent act, we have declined his request for mediation. We will press charges and demand criminal sanctions.”
Feng suffered from soft tissue injuries because of the slaps which required medical attention. According to Beijing Evening News, Li regretted what he did and is willing to cooperate with police investigation.
Past victims of beatings were two women in the hands of men, but the persistent growth in child abuse cases across China indicate the roots of beating other people comes from the childhood of many adult Chinese who received harsh physical punishment from their parents. It translates into adult Chinese using their hands or feet to beat others as a form of correction on the person they were beating.
