Have we seen the last of Floyd Mayweather? Nearly a year after the much-awaited but highly disappointing PacMan fight, the answer starts to waver.
Despite his repeated denials, the question is always asked in every opportunity. Is Floyd Mayweather, Jr. coming back? ESPN Insider reports that the door is not totally closed.
Quoting an interview with Showtime, these were Mayweather's ominous words.
"Everyone is asking me, 'Is Floyd Mayweather coming back?'" Mayweather said. "Right now, I'm happy being on this side, but I've been talking with CBS and Showtime, and you just never know. But right now, I'm just happy on this side."
Mayweather then was asked what it would take to come back."
Money knows that "you just never know" would be more than enough to spark all sorts of speculation. This is most likely not an accident.
"As of right now, some crazy numbers have been thrown my way -- upwards, of course, of nine figures," he told Showtime. "But I'm truly blessed beyond belief, and I really don't know what we're going to do. But right now, I'm really happy being on this side helping our fighters."
Who would Mayweather fight? The latest Pacquiao-Bradley match, which was Manny Pacquiao's own version of "this is my last fight but no one believes me" seemed like a rematch audition. Still being true to form, Pacman still had the handspeed to challenge a fighter at his peak and even got close to knocking him out, as he claims.
There's also Gennady Golovkin, but Mayweather may seem to have dismissed him.
"I think that it's best that he go up and fight Andre Ward," Mayweather said of Golovkin. "I think that would be a good fight for Triple G and Andre Ward. How can Floyd Mayweather fight at 160 [pounds] when I can never even make 154?"
Fox Sports noted that when Money was asked whether a potential comeback would be for the big payday or the chance to improve his all-time record to 50-0 ... he laughed before answering.
"For both. For both." He elaborated that there should be a "nine figure payday."
As big as a draw Mayweather is, there are only two fights that would provide those numbers: A Manny Pacquiao rematch or a rematch with Saul Canelo Alvarez, provided he wins against Amir Khan on Saturday.
