The Philadelphia 76ers is a team that should make some moves to balance their roster.
While they were speculated to be a player in the trade deadline, the Sixers did not make any major moves to clear their logjam at the center spot.
While it sounds like a very simple-trade one of their centers to get a point guard that they badly need, the Sixers brass are hesitant or perhaps they could not get the return that they were hoping for.
One of the speculated trades from their local site, Philly Sports Network, involved trading promising rookie Jahlil Okafor for Eric Bledsoe of the Phoenix Suns.
"The Sixers need a point guard," Mike Morlina of PSN said. "It is easily the most glaring need on the team. (Bledsoe) would be coming off a torn meniscus, but if he is healthy, he could put up 20 points and 6 assists a game with ease. The 26 year old is also an experienced veteran who can step in and be the leader of the team."
That sounds like a sound plan but Sam Hinkie did not pull the trigger and new GM Brian Colangelo may be on the fence. Despite the NBA trend of "small ball" having a reliable scoring center is still a rare asset in the league. Besides, there is a chance the Sixers have explored this trade but it did not work out. The Suns are place a premium on Bledsoe.
In the absence of game-changing point guard options, the Sixers may as well try their luck with the NBA Draft where they have multiple first round picks. The Sixer Sense reports that they are "very high" on Kris Dunn from Providence.
"The most recent report is that the Sixers are high on guard Kris Dunn, and that the feeling is quite mutual," TSS mentioned. "Dunn was very open with the media about how pleased he was with his Sixers interview and how he really wanted to play for them if they gave the chance."
Dunn is possibly the top option at point guard in the 2016 Draft. His rival would be Jamal Murray of Kentucky but he's known more as a scorer.
It was presumed before that point guard was too important a position to entrust to a rookie, but the Sixers may be thinking of building the best team this season and then try to pursue a point guard at the end of the 2017 season when there are more options.
