"Star Trek Beyond" nearly missed Karl Urban, the actor who plays Doctor Leonard McCoy if not of Director Justin Lin who changed his mind. Urban revealed that his contract expired and he did not think of returning for the third instalment of the rebooted movie franchise.
Being not obligated to do another "Star Trek" film, Urban was on another project but Lin told him all he needed to know about the movie. Like Urban, the director is a fan of the franchise himself and is good at instilling excitement and confidence in the actor.
Fans and actors involved seemed skeptical upon learning that the directorial job of the "Star Trek Beyond" was given to "Fast & Furious" director. However, Lin's vision eventually became clear for the cast and crew when they started to work on the project. It was something bold and new.
Urban was interviewed by IGN after Paramount's huge fan event for the film. He loves their teamwork and said, "I think between Simon, Doug, and Justin and myself, we really formed a wonderful collaborative team."
The 44-year-old New Zealand actor appreciates the director's intimate knowledge on character dynamics, calling it "fantastic and a breath of fresh air." The film has a lot of material that will make long-term fans happy. As for the Spock - McCoy team-up, Urban shared there is complexity in its dynamics but with a great deal of humor.
The upcoming movie with Lin will be different from J.J. Abrams "Star Trek" films because as a fan, Lin wanted to explore the journey and the relationships of its characters. The previous films were about traveling and exploring new worlds, which is important to have. Abrams set the world up and Lin came in.
The director hopes to rationalize what makes the "Star Trek" film special. He hopes they can help keep it going, he said during an interview with Collider and other reporters on the movie's filming set in Vancouver.
Writers Jung and Pegg are among the factors that make the upcoming film different. Furthermore, Lin took seriously what Abrams told him about the project, "Look. Just take it over, and whatever you do, be bold."
Lin is already at the place in his career where he does not merely do things. He told the reporters it was great to explore and try new stuff.
