Facebook is updating its News Feed feature to make it easier for users to connect with their friends and family. Their posts will be placed toward the top of News Feed so people do not miss important information from Facebook friends. They will just have to scroll down the social network's feed.
Adam Mosseri is vice present of product management for Facebook News Feed. He wrote in a blog post on June 29, Wednesday that the social giant is updating News Feed.
Mosseri shared that the company's top priority is that people can connect to people, places, and things.
The Facebook VP also stated that the engineers of the world's largest social network are always studying about what is most important to Facebook users. Then they tweak the services.
Mosseri described the company's goal as getting people the stories they want to read. For example, they might pick 10 out of thousands of stories, according to Computerworld.
However, Facebook is not just putting friends and family posts at the top of News Feed. It is also placing more value on news stories and videos they will think are interesting.
Meanwhile, some Facebook users have lambasted Mark Zuckerberg's company for using algorithms to filter the news they receive. However, the company noted that there is a ton of information on Facebook. It is concerned about people missing information that is important to them, while Mosseri pointed out that users can use tools to control what they see in News Feed.
In related news, Facebook is changing its Like button from the letter F logo to the thumbs up logo, according to BBC. The company is also updating the Share and Follow icons.
In addition, last week Facebook ended the ability for video creators to add links to clips. It had been a popular feature with broadcasters who used it as a way to drive traffic to their sites.
Facebook suddenly made the changes earlier this month.
Experts explain the decision shows how much power Facebook has over how people read and watch the news. A recent study showed that over one-quarter of United Kingdom residents use Facebook as a news source at least once per week.
