One of the highlights in the HBO hit series "Game of Thrones" was Kit Harington's character Jon Snow's death and resurrection. However, speculations indicated that the Lord Commander's return to the land of the living may be a story plot to help boost the viewers' interest for the show.
There have been several speculations surrounding Jon ever since he died in the Season 5 finale of the series, followed by his resurrection in the second episode of Season 6. The mysticism surrounding the resurrection magic featured in the HBO series has indicated that a person who was brought back to life would be slightly different from when that person was alive.
The same scenario was expected from Harington's character following his escape from death. However, fans have yet to see any changes in Jon during the series' Season 6. He also appears to behave and act in the same way prior his death. Speculations posted on TV Guide mentioned that a potential reason behind Jon's death and resurrection was to help re-energize the show amid storyline criticisms and during a midpoint in the series.
Several other potential reasons were included in the same report such as a chance to have Jon break away from the Night's Watch, as well as a way for the character to quickly rise to a position of power. Another was to showcase Melisandre's (Carice van Houten) abilities. However, all three scenarios can also be depicted in the HBO series in a different way, as indicated in the same report.
As for the side effect of Melisandre's resurrection magic, there is a possibility that the viewers have yet to see what has changed in Jon. The same report mentioned that showrunners may possibly decide to incorporate this into the upcoming new season.
Although producer Bryan Cogman previously commented that Harington's character did die in the series and the resurrected Jon is a new character altogether, Winter is Coming reported. Even Harington shared that Jon may have returned to the land of the living but a part of him has gone away. The actor also stated that the new Jon is a little bit evil and bad than the old one.
