The woes of iPhone owners, who have been demanding higher native storage space, seem to be over. According to reports, the entry-level model of Apple's next-generation iPhones will come with lowest 32GB capacity.
The base model for Apple's purported iPhone 7 will include 32GB storage, which is twice the 16-GB base seen in the iPhone lineup for several years, The Wall Street Journal reported citing people who are familiar with the developments. The report, however, does not meantion what the rest of the product lineup may be.
The entry-level 16GB offering on the iPhone is basically seen as an upsell tactics by the Cupertino tech giant. Apple ditched the 32GB capacity when it launched the iPhone 6 in 2014. Instead, it offered the customers the option to quadruple their device's storage to 64 GB by paying $100 more.
Several other smartphone manufacturers are currently offering 32GB storage by default, as memory has become relatively cheaper. Moreover, the size of apps, media as well as the operating systems has made devices with 16 GB storage more and more impractical, Apple Insider reported.
Meanwhile, there are rumors that Apple may offer a new premium model with a huge 256 GB storage. At present, the flagship iPhone 6s has a maximum of 128GB storage.
The purported iPhone 7, which is expected to arrive this September, is also likely to have very enhanced cameras. In addition, the continued availability of 4K video on the iPhone will also consume onboard storage rather quickly. Hence, offering 16GB storage on the entry level model will not be viable.
The next-gen iPhone is expected to have minor upgrades, with Apple planning a major upgrade for iPhone 8, which is expected to come on the smartphone's 10th anniversary next year. Nevertheless, each new model is likely to come with two or three main selling points.
Aside from a duel lens camera, the iPhone 7 will have a faster "A10" processor. It is also expected to ditch the usual 3.5-mm headphone jack for the thinnest iPhone design ever. Instead, the device will come with a wireless headset or Apple earbuds that plug into the Lightning charging port.
