IBM has unveiled its IBM Storage Spectrum designed to help clients move data to the right location at the right time.
IBM's software-defined storage system gives users the convenience to move data from one place to another the easiest and fastest way possible, according to IBM. The company's first spectrum storage to be released is called IBM Spectrum.
IBM will offer its traditional storage systems in software form so customers can choose to buy them as appliance, software or service, PC World reported.
"The software helps clients move data to the right location, at the right time, from flash storage for fast access to tape and cloud for the lowest cost", IBM said.
IBM will invest some $1 billion for the storage software over the next five years. The first Spectrum Storage product is IBM Spectrum Accelerate, software based on IBM's own XIV high-end storage appliance.
Users will have the option to choose whether they want to get it as service, software, or appliance, PC World reported.
Spectrum Accelerate is a disk based storage system but can use flash as high-speed cache. Users can also install the storage software on an Intel-based system and IBM powered platforms.
The new storage software creates a footprint of every action made and stores that data at the optimal cost which maximizes the security and performance, according to IT Pro Portal.
IBM Spectrum Storage integrates over 7,000 patents that help users move about vast amount of data smoothly from a single dashboard.
The storage software is to be released next month.
