The Houston Rockets are reportedly set to cut Jason Terry from their official roster next season and a reunion with the Boston Celtics has been suggested if the veteran guard wants to continue his NBA playing career.
Terry, who turns 39 in September before the new NBA season begins, is said to be "on the outside looking in" along with another Rockets veteran Josh Smith after ESPN indicated that the 14th and 15th spots in Houston's roster is set to be filled up by point guard Pablo Prigioni and current restricted free agent Donatas Motiejunas soon.
The report also said that Terry himself admitted in a recent radio interview that the Rockets have notified him that he will not be given a new contract this summer. He had just finished the one-year, $1.5 million deal he received from Houston last summer.
Terry spent the last two seasons with the Rockets as primary backup at both guard spots. However, he had also played some starter minutes whenever starting point guard Patrick Beverley was sidelined by injury and also after the failed experiment with Ty Lawson last season.
He averaged 5.9 points, 1.1 boards, and 1.4 assists in 17.5 minutes of playing time per night in 72 games last season, one of the lowest numbers in his so far 17-year career since his rookie season.
Meanwhile, Fansided's Jeremy Karll suggested that a reunion with the Celtics would "make sense" for the former NBA Sixth Man of the Year awardee.
Terry signed with Boston before the 2012-2013 season, which turned out to be his last productive year in the NBA, during Doc Rivers final run as Celtics head coach.
The combo guard was included in the historic deal that also sent Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for three future first-round picks plus Kris Humphries, Gerald Wallace, Kris Joseph, MarShon Brooks, and Keith Bogans.
Karll noted that if Terry "chose to come to Boston knowing the Big 3 era was coming to an end" then "why wouldn't he be happy to join an up-and-coming team?"
He also noted that Terry's reported close relationship with Celtics starting point guard Isaiah Thomas could also be factor that would persuade him to choose to continue his career in Boston next season.
