“Room” star Brie Larson makes Hollywood history by being the first female actress to play the title role of “Captain Marvel” in the upcoming Marvel Studios film.
The announcement on Saturday ended months of speculations when it was announced at the San Diego Comic-Con that she would lead the cast of the movie slated for release in March 2019. Entertainment Weekly reported that Larsen went up the stage during Marvel’s Hall H Pane where she was joined by Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios.
Completing the Marvel family portrait were casts of “Doctor Strange,” “Black Panther,” Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
In October 2014, Feige announced the new version of Captain Marvel would be a woman. “Let me clarify. Captain Marvel has gone by many names in the comics, has had many people who’ve inhabited that costume and used that power base. I want to make it very clear: This hero’s name is Carol Danvers.”
In the movie, Captain Marvel’s disguise is as Carol Danvers, a fighter pilot with alien DNA. Her powers include the ability to fly and shoot beams out of her hands. Captain Marvel, in the comics, works with the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, an indicator that she would play an important role in the Marvel universe when the two teams join forces to fight one big foe, reported Time.
Brie’s credits include roles in “21 Jump Street” and “Trainwreck” where she was the straight woman to comedians such as Jonah Hill and Amy Schumer. “Room: and the indie film “Short Term 12” showed Brie’s emotional depth she brought to a character, which is a trait she would need for Marvel movies as the film creates a good balance between fun and drama.
