Just before "Sherlock Holmes" Season 4 will hit the small screens in 2017, the British-American crime drama television series has many things to celebrate after bagging six nominations at the Emmy Awards. However, the good news coincides with the speculations that the new season will be the last time that fans will see Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the lead role Sherlock Holmes, in the show.
In an interview with The Telegraph, the show's executive producer Steven Moffat said that he was glad that they still have Cumberbatch and his side kick Martin Freeman, who plays Doctor Watson, given that both are highly in-demand in the film industry. Cumberbatch is set to portray Marvel "Doctor's Strange" while Freeman recently appeared in "Captain America: Civil War" and in the much-anticipated "Black Panther."
"I don't know how long we can keep it going," Moffat told the publication about the rumors that "Sherlock Holmes" Season 4 may be the last of the BBC popular series. "I'm personally willing but I'm hardly the main draw. I would be moderately surprised if this was the last time we ever made this show."
Moffat also boasted that Cumberbatch and Freeman did not accept the TV roles for the price they are receiving, but for the happiness they can give to their fans. He added that they do not need to do these TV jobs at all since they are now successful in the movies. However, Moffat believed that they accepted the roles because they want to.
The executive producer assured that if Cumberbatch and Freeman get too busy to do "Sherlock Holmes" Season 4 or other seasons in the future, BBC will be returning when their schedules allow. Moffat added that the show could go on forever.
Just this week, Cumberbatch was nominated in the lead actor category for the TV movie. "Sherlock: The Abominable Bride" received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding TV Movie, cinematography, sound mixing, sound editing and visual effects.
In line with the upcoming season, Sherlock's official Twitter account shared a photo of Cumberbatch with his new buddy, a bloodhound. Aside from the detective's canine companion, there are also speculations that new characters will be introduced in the mini-series.

In a statement released by Masterpiece, it said that "Sherlock Holmes" Season 4 will feature three episodes that bring tears, laughter, surprises, shocks and extraordinary adventures. The upcoming season will see Doctor Watson and his wife Mary (Amanda Abbington) getting ready for their new role as parents.
The actor has been filming Season 4 since the Spring of 2016. Aside from Moffat, Mark Gatiss returned as one of the writers of the highly-anticipated detective series.
