"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will be bigger than ever, as evidenced by the spectacular cast presented at the movie's panel at San Diego Comic Con 2016 and the major spoilers James Gunn revealed.
Perhaps, one of the most exciting things about the upcoming sequel is the addition of Kurt Russell, who plays Peter Quill/Star Lord's dad, Scoop Everyday reported. Much of his identity was kept under wraps until recently. It was revealed that Russell is portraying Ego The Living Planet, which is quite a confusing character to begin with.
In the comic books, Ego is exactly what the rest of his name says - he's basically a living planet with a face. He was originally an alien scientist until a freak accident allowed him to merge with his home planet.
Ego the Living Planet is a villain in the comics and he conquers other planets around him. However, it's been made clear that Russell will not appear as a planet throughout the entire film and will in fact take human form (he did, after all, impregnate Star Lord's mom).
He's a rather peculiar character, but much of his story and how he became to be a cosmic being will be explained in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2."
Speaking to Cinema Blend, Gunn also teased that the sophomore "Guardians" film is going to be different from the first. "We're still a space fantasy, and we're still fun. But there are more science-fiction elements. We explain more about how they travel through space in this one," Gunn said.
Also introduced at SDCC 2016 was the Ravager crew. This intergalactic group of gangster returns to the second movie with Yondu as their leader. They played a big role in the events of the first movie, having fought Star Lord and his crew to obtain the Orb. According to Screen Rant, it is rumored that Sylvester Stallone will make a cameo appearance as one of Yondu's Ravagers.
Also joining the "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" cast are Elizabeth Debicki and Pom Klementieff, who will play Kismet and Mantis, respectively.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will hit theatres May 5, 2017.
