"Castle" Season 9 was canceled just a week before the Season 8 finale premieres, despite initial rumors that the show has been renewed. The decision left the show's fans upset and confused. However, now ABC boss has finally come up with reasons why it was decided to cancel the show.
New ABC President Channing Dungey recently expressed his view about the show's cancellation during the Television Critics Association's press tour, which took place on August 4, Thursday. According to Dungey, the studio has asked the two actresses, Stana Katic and Tamala Jones to prepare of "Castle" Season 9. However, ABC soon decided that it would not renew the show for the next season, Entertainment Weekly reported.
Less than a month before the decision was made, it was announced that both Jones and Katic have decided not to renew their contracts for the next season and therefore, would not be returning back for "Castle" Season 9. The exit of the two leading characters, Detective Kate Beckett and medical examiner Lanie Parish gave fans little hope that the show would be renewed.
"We were always very up-front with the studio and the producers about the possibility that we might not be bringing the show back for season 9, but the studio has to do what they need to do in order to prepare for the possibility of season 9," Dungey said during the event.
That is the reason why the studio did what they felt was right to do to prepare in case they get an approval from the network. However, ABC felt that now renewing the show for the next season was the right thing to do at that particular moment.
Since ABC's decision came up very late, the executive producers of the show had to fiddle with "Castle" Season 8 finale to show that it would have a happy ending, according to People. The fans did notice a happy ending in the final that aired back on May 16, 2016 when the detectives finally solved the LokSat mystery. In addition, the episode took a time leap of seven years to show Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett living together happily along with their three children.
