The shoe name Stan Smith was released by Adidas in the 1970s era. It is named after the legendary tennis player who was active in the sport from 1960 to 1980.

It was originally conceived by Adidas in the early 1960s as a tennis shoe that would be endorsed by Smith. The shoe was originally called Haillet until it was renamed after the tennis superstar in 1971.

By 1980, the Stan Smith sneakers has been sold about 22 million pairs and was listed in the Guinness World Records. In 1994, the number of pairs sold increased to 23.7 million.

Through course of time, Adidas has made variations of the Stan Smith model that eventually differed from its original old school feel. By 2008, Adidas released a replica of the original 1980s Stan Smith model and they called it Adidas Stan Smith 80s.

Including the re-release of the iconic sneaker, Adidas has confirmed that the total sales of their Stan Smith brand since the 1970s has gone up to 40 million pairs sold.
