Another major Chinese official is being prosecuted as part of President Hu Jintao’s anti-corruption campaign.
Wang Baoan, former head of the National Bureau of Statistics, would be prosecuted for suspected severe disciplinary violations as a result of an investigation on him initiated in January, reported Indian Express. He was also expelled from the ruling Communist Party.
He is accused of power trading, money for sex and following superstitious beliefs. The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), China’s anti-corruption agency, confirmed the expulsion of Wang from the Communist Party of China and his being kicked out of public office.
CCDI described Wang as a morally bankrupt person who used to go to expensive hotels and luxury entertainment venues. He is charged with accepting gifts and money and using his power to ask for benefits and business perks for his relative and committing bribery, reported Xinhua News Agency.
“As a high-level official, Wang abandoned his ideals and beliefs and severely violated party discipline. Even after the 18th CPC National Congress, he still showed no sign of restraint and (his wrongdoings) were of a grave nature,” CCDI said in a statement.
His illegal gains would be seized and case transferred to the judiciary. Before Wang became head of the statistics bureau, he served as deputy finance minister from 2012 until April 2015, reported Reuters.
