Sami Zayn will try to move one step close to Kevin Owens’ Universal title by taking on the champ’s ally, Chris Jericho. Both will face off at WWE Clash of the Champions set for Sept. 25.
The match came bout following a heated exchange between the two on the “Highlight Reel”, WWE.com reported. Y2J tried to roast the Canadian, feting his friend for being the reigning Universal champion.
Zayn tried to knock some sense into Jericho by reminding him of his accomplishments and how he has now ended up trying to hype Owens. The segment ended when Jericho took out his cellphone and eventually hit Zayn with it, capping it with his patented ‘Code Breaker’ finisher, Bleacher Report reported.
That scene apparently set the stage for a Zayn vs. Jericho match which is likely to start a feud between the two. With Owens busy attending to a storyline opposite Seth Rollins, it could set the stage for a future clash between the two former best friends.
Undoubtedly, Zayn is one of the big fan-favorites. All that was on display when the WWE held a couple of Triple Threat matches via live events last week. Zayn may not be competing for the Universal title but could be primed for it at some point moving forward.
All that could be a long way off as the creative team tries to mold a match involving the two former NXT stars. There are apparently a couple of tweaks needed, including how to divert Rollins to another storyline.
The easy answer to that is Rollins much awaited clash with the WWE COO Triple H, Bleacher Report reported. Seeds were already planted when Triple H orchestrated the Owens’ win of the Universal title at Aug. 29 edition of WWE Raw.
A Triple H vs. Seth Rollins showdown is widely expected to go down at Wrestlemania 33 though a lot of precedents stand to happen in the pay-per-views before that. Once that happens, it could be Zayn’s chance to step up and challenge Owens for the Universal title.
