Former contestants of the MTV show "Pimp My Ride" have shared that many aspects of the show were fake. Several of the showy customized upgrades that rapper Xzibit and the crew at West Coast Customs were broken, worsened the car, or were removed after filming.
The show was extremely popular when it debuted in 2004. Participants in the show owned "lemons" that West Coast Customs would then "pimp out" with flashy changes to the exterior and interior.
"Pimp My Ride" also became famous for over-the-top additions to the vehicles. They included arcade machines, pool tables, and chandeliers.
However, many past contestants have revealed on Redditt that many of the customizations were only added for the show. They were often removed after filming was done. That includes a drive-in theater and pop-up champagne machine.
According to the executive producer, the show removed various items for specific reasons. For example, they might remove rims because they would be dangerous for day-to-day driving.
Another contestant complained that the LED lights that West Coast Customs installed in his seats were impractical. They looked hot, but were also too hot for his posterior while he was driving.
The same contestant, Sam Martino said that the show installed a cotton candy machine in his car because he was overweight. Employees poured bags of candy onto the pre-pimped seat and floor of his car, and then claimed that he often stored candy there, according to Daily Mail.
Other contestants claimed that their reactions to their "pimped-out" vehicles were often faked, according to Huffington Post. They were filmed several times until the contestants looked and acted thrilled enough for the show's producers.
