The phenomenal Walt Disney 3D-animated film "Big Hero 6" landed on Chinese theaters on Saturday, earning a whopping 92.9 million yuan ($14.8 million) in its opening week.
The record-breaking figure is the biggest opening weekend of all time for a Disney movie in China.
"Big Hero 6" is produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is immensely known for bringing Baymax to life. Baymax is an adorable nursing robot that served as Hiro's "partner-in-crime" throughout his and his team's adventure.
Serving as the 54th installation in the popular Walt Disney Animated Classic series, the 3D action-comedy motion picture is patterned after the well-loved Marvel superhero team of the same name.
With this film, it was a first for Disney to make use of Marvel Comics characters. It features the voices of Ryan Otter, Scott Adsit, Daniel Henney, T.J. Miller, Damon Wayans Jy, Jamie Chung, Genesis Rodriguez, Alan Tudyk, Maya Rudolph and James Cromwell.
"Big Hero 6" was first shown during the 27th Tokyo International Firm Festival held on Oct. 23 last year. The movie's 3D version premiered at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival on Oct. 31, while its theatrical edition was released in the United States on Nov. 7.
As of press time, the movie has already earned a 3.6 billion yuan ($572 million) gross income worldwide. For the year 2014, "Big Hero 6" was regarded as the second highest-grossing animated film, coming behind the sequel of "How to Train Your Dragon."
The film was also lauded in this year's Academy Award after earning the Oscar tilt for Best Animated Feature. As well, it has earned nominations for the same category in the Annie, BAFTA and Golden Globe Awards.
