David Leitch has emerged as the frontrunner to grace the director's chair for Fox's highly anticipated film, "Deadpool 2." The filmmaker's credits include the 2014 blockbuster hit "John Wick" and its upcoming sequel, "John Wick: Chapter 2."
Leitch, who is also directing the Charlize Theron Cold War thriller "The Coldest City," has apparently already held a meeting with Reynolds to discuss the project. The news comes days after Tim Miller dropped out of the project due to a creative rift with actor Ryan Reynolds.
A deal with Leitch is yet to be finalized and there are other contenders in the running including Drew Goddard and Magnus Martens, a director on Marvel's Netflix series "Luke Cage." However, Leitch is being considered as a favorite to helm the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Miller's departure came as a surprise to many as he made his feature directorial debut with the original. The filmmaker was also credited with playing an important role in the movie's blockbuster success along with Reynolds, and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. However, conflicts over the tone of the film lead to the director's exit.
Leitch started his career as a stuntman and worked on several films including "Blade," "Daredevil" and "The Matrix" series among others. He also played Brad Pitt's stunt double in the cult film, "Fight Club."
Over the course of two decades, Leitch made his way up the ranks and became a stunt co-ordinator for films like "V for Vendetta," "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," "Speed Racer," and "Tron: Legacy." Later, he served as a second unit director with films like "Jurassic World" "Captain America: Civil War" among his credits.
The release date for "Deadpool 2" has not yet been confirmed. However, a number of actresses are being eyed to play the coveted role of Domino in the film. These include the likes of Kelly Rohrbach, Eve Hewson, Ruby Rose, Mackenzie Davis, Lizzy Caplan, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Sienna Miller, Sofia Boutella, Stephanie Sigman and Sylvia Hoeks, according to The Wrap.
