Unfortunately for "Divergent" fans, the supposed fourth and last installment of the movie franchise, "Divergent: Ascendant," will not see the light of day. Instead, the movie has been confirmed by Lionsgate to be made into a television movie, a matter that has upset fans and the movie's cast members.
Following the announcement that "Divergent: Ascendant" was to be made into a television movie, many of the "Divergent" cast members expressed shock and disinterest in moving forward with the project.
Speaking to Screen Rant, lead star Shailene Woodley said she only found out about the news through media and that she wasn't personally informed about the studio's decision. When asked if she was willing to reprise her role as Tris Prior, Woodley said, "Out of respect to the studio and everyone involved, they may have changed their mind and may be doing something different, but I'm not necessarily interested in doing a television show."
Woodley's co-star, Miles Teller, wasn't also very ecstatic to hear news about the "Divergent: Ascendant" TV movie. "We all signed on for it in hopes that it'd be released in theaters, and we all had every intention of finishing [the franchise]," the "War Dogs" star told The Hollywood Reporter. "It caught us all by surprise."
Leading man Theo James, who plays Four in the "Divergent" movies has been quiet about the news, but it is presumed that he, too, is not interested in working on a made-for-TV version of "Divergent: Ascendant."
It is reported that one of the reasons why James is not particularly excited to reprise his role in a TV movie is that he will be busy planning his wedding with long-time girlfriend Ruth Kearney. It was previously rumored that James and Kearney postponed their wedding because of the actor's dating controversy with Woodley. The couple has since denied the rumors and proved that their relationship is still strong.
James and Kearney started dating in 2009 and got engaged in 2015. Reports said James wanted to wrap up "Divergent" first before he gets married. Now that a "Divergent: Ascendant" theatrical release is off the table, it seems James has more time on his hands to make wedding plans.
