The baby bump inside S.H.E. member Ella Chen is a boy. The four-month pregnant celebrity announced on social media the gender of her first child with husband Alvin Lai, a Malaysian businessman.
Besides announcing their child’s gender, Lai also posted photos of Ella Chen cooking at home which included eight black-and-white photos on the kitchen wall that netizens guess are ultrasound results of her pregnancy, Toggle reported.
She previously hinted in a recent press conference for the launch of a new album that she dreamt the baby would be a male child. But at that time, Ella Chen was not yet sure about the gender of the baby yet.
Like many celebrities, the S.H.E. member used social media to announce her pregnancy in late October when she posted her and Lai’s photo with Ella Chen holding a pregnancy test stick. In mid-November, HIM International Music, the label of the Chinese girl group, dismissed rumors that the girl group would go on a three-year hiatus because of the pregnancy of Ella Chen.
Because she married a little bit late in 2012 and did not immediately become pregnant, a Chinese website claimed that Ella Chen is a transgender woman. On Dec. 7, 2015, in a post on her Weibo account, the S.H.E. member debunked the speculations over her gender. She wrote, “The situation is getting out of hand, I must explain! I am not transgender!” Asiaone reported.
At her Christmas concert in Guangzhou, Ella Chen acknowledged that the doubt over her gender – the Chinese website claimed she has female and male reproductive organs – must partly have stemmed from her making jokes about having undergone gender reassignment surgery.
To further show she is not afraid of the rumor, Ella Chen accepted in August to be the ambassador of the 3rd annual Taiwan International Queer Film Festival held on Oct. 22 to 30.
