The upcoming religious epic "Silence" made Adam Driver lose weight and enjoy standing ovation from director Martin Scorsese during its first public screening. Driver needed to drop 50 pounds for his role and trailer shows him becoming shockingly thin-looking. His story of losing those pounds was not just about hard work, but was also horrible.
The filming of Scorsese's movie had the characters traveling for two years from Portugal to Macau and sailing around Africa. They have undergone shortage of food and been to places struck with disease.
"You're so hungry and so tired at some points that there's nothing you can do -- you're not adding anything on top of what you're doing," Driver told Interview. "You only have enough energy to convey what you're doing, so it's great."
Driver added that the good thing about the experience is that they would be so weak they could not figure out why a scene, for example, was not working. It means, they just had to deliver what was required.
The "Star Wars" star shared Scorsese wants his actors to work with him in a collaborative environment. The director would not tell anyone just what to do but love to get their ideas and take ownership of those.
Set to be in theaters on Dec. 23, "Silence" world premiered at the Vatican on Nov. 29, Tuesday, and had screened for the National Board of Review members before that. The latter adored the film with a Best Adapted Screenplay prize and considered it one of this year's best films.
Scorsese also got a hero's welcome on Dec. 4, Sunday, at the first public screening of his film. He was given a standing ovation by a crowd of 700 which included studio guests, Academy members and press who appeared to be impressed by his unusually contemplative work, The Wrap reported.
Aside from Driver, "Silence" stars Liam Neeson, Andrew Garfield and Japanese veteran actor Issey Ogata. Based on the 1966 novel with the same title by Shusaku Endo, the film tells the story of a 17th century Jesuit priest in Japan. Portrayed by Garfield, the priest's faith was tested under the violent persecution of Christian followers by the emperor's Inquisitor played by Ogata.
