"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" had multiple references to other films, television shows and books from the "Star Wars" franchise. One of these references involve the crew members and ship from the "Star Wars Rebels" series and now producer Dave Filoni has confirmed that the show will tie into the movie sometime in the future.
The Ghost, the ship flown by the "Star Wars Rebels" characters, was seen at the landing pad on Yavin 4, confirming that the ship and its surviving crew members are still a member of the Rebel Alliance. Hera Syndulla is also referenced when someone on the intercom announces "General Syndulla" is needed at the briefing room.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Filoni confirmed that the "General Syndulla" was indeed Hera and not her father, who was also a member of the Rebel Alliance. This would confirm that in a future season of "Star Wars Rebels" audiences may see her rise up the ranks and become a key general in the rebellion.
Filoni was more vague when it came to which of the Ghost's crew members were still alive by the time the events of "Rogue One" took place. Hera is still alive given she is now a general and the C1-10P droid known as Chopper can also be seen going about the Rebel base on Yavin 4.
Both Kanan and Ezra are both not expected to survive and make it to this time period given that in the films that follow, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) becomes the last known Jedi in the galaxy. This would indicate they either died or went missing prior to the events of "Rogue One."
Filoni also explained that the Battle of Scarif may be retold in the series, stating "I already have some theories about the story behind it. I can imagine doing that entire Scarif battle from their point of view, whoever is on the Ghost at that point."
One step in tying the show and the film further together is the confirmation that Saw Gerrera, played by Forest Whitaker in the film, will be appearing in "Star Wars Rebels." A short teaser trailer has been released and it shows Saw meeting up with the crew of the Ghost. According to Collider, Whitaker will reprise his role and will voice the character for his appearance in the series.
