The last SmackDown Live of 2016 lived up to the hype. John Cena teased a heel turn and a new champion was crowned. It was an overall better show than Monday Night Raw and it ended with a face-to-face showdown between Cena and A.J. Styles.
First, here are the full results of the December 27 episode of WWE SmackDown, per WWE.com.
- American Alpha became the new SmackDown tag team champions. They defeated The Wyatt Family, Heath Slater and Rhyno, and The Usos in a Four Corners Elimination Match. The final two teams were American Alpha and The Wyatt Family.
- Alexa Bliss retained the SmackDown women's title after interference from La Luchadora. The new masked superstar hit Becky Lynch's head on an exposed turnbuckle as Bliss capitalized to hit the DDT for the win.
- A.J. Styles outlasted Dolph Ziggler and Barry Corbin to remain the WWE championship. John Cena came out to confront Styles and they ended up shaking hands as the show goes off the air.
Besides the matches, there are a lot of great moments from this week's episode. Here are the five biggest moments from the December 27 edition of SmackDown Live.
John Cena returns!
The 15-time WWE champion returned full of intensity. He received mixed reactions from the Chicago crowd but Cena showed some heel tendencies during his promo. He announced that he will face the winner of the WWE championship match at the Royal Rumble.
It garnered a lot of boos from the crowd but Cena was not having any of it. He told the Chicago crowd that he can do it because he is John Cena. Arrogant and cocky Cena is a fresh of breath air and hopefully, he turns heel next year.
American Alpha becomes tag team champions
Finally, American Alpha is the new tag team champions. It came at the expense of The Wyatt Family but it is great to see one of the best tag teams in the main roster having the titles. Heath Slater and Rhyno were eliminated first then followed by The Usos.
Luke Harper and Randy Orton were on a roll with Bray Wyatt watching on the outside. However, a miscommunication between Harper and Orton led to the loss. Alpha hit the Grand Amplitude on Orton for the big win.
Alexa Bliss retains
Bliss and Becky Lynch had a good match but it ended in controversy again. La Luchadora came out and helped the champ retained the title. It looks like Bliss will have a new challenger while Becky goes after whoever was in the La Luchadora mask.
Dean Ambrose is awesome again
The Miz employed security to help fend off Dean Ambrose. The IC champ was being interviewed by Renee Young when a security-dressed Ambrose sneaked up from behind and attacked The Miz. It was a classic Ambrose attack and he is a much better character like that.
Styles retain WWE title, Cena teases another heel turn
"The Phenomenal One" was victorious in the Triple Threat Match against Dolph Ziggler and Baron Corbin. "The Lone Wolf" looked dominant in the match but Styles was able to retain the WWE championship.
Cena came out to confront Styles after the match. He removed his cap, shirt, and armband, and he looked ready to fight. Instead, he extended his hand to Styles as the show ended with the two stars looking at each other.
The WWE is clearly teasing a Cena heel turn. First, he was cocky and arrogant earlier in the show. And in the main event, there was a feeling that Cena will attack Styles after their handshake. Nevertheless, it was a great show once again as SmackDown Live trumps Raw to end the year.
