"Tokyo 42" is an upcoming game that utilizes an isometric viewpoint and blends the gameplay mechanics of both the "Grand Theft Auto" games and "Syndicate." Being a blend of action and stealth there will be multiple approaches in completing a mission and a brand new trailer fully showcases this.
The trailer focuses on a mission titled "Twin Punks," in which the main protagonist must infiltrate a gang stronghold and then take out the group's leader. Multiple checkpoints can be activated on the map, ensuring players can restart at certain locations instead of having to redo an entire mission from scratch.
In the first approach, developers Smac Games and publisher Mode 7 focus on showcasing a stealthy method of completing the mission. During this portion the main character hides behind walls and maneuvers around the patrol patterns of the guards before taking them out with a melee attack.
Stealth is abandoned in the second approach and instead the character is shown tossing a grenade at the enemy stronghold to get their attention. Once the gang members are in sight the game turns into a bullet-hell type of game, with slower bullets flying across the screen.
Both attempts lead to failure, with the character losing the battles and getting killed. Once the player dies they respawn at the most recent checkpoint terminal they activated. This system guarantees players can attempt multiple approaches to a mission, PC Gamer reported.
There will be other elements in the game that further amplify its focus on stealth and precision action sequences. The player will have the option of changing their skin color on the fly to avoid assassins hunting them down and there will also be multiple Easter eggs and side-quests hidden throughout the levels, Dual Shockers reported.
Multiplayer will also be available. A player and their opponent will spawn into a small fighting arena and each must find and eliminate the other before they can be spotted. This system will integrate the same blend of stealth and action from the single-player campaign.
"Tokyo 42" releases early this year for PC, Xbox One and PS4. The aforementioned trailer can be viewed below:
