John Cena is on the cusp of being the next wrestler to go big in Hollywood. He is set to star in several films this year and in 2018 which makes his WWE status uncertain. The latest news implies that Cena will take another hiatus after WrestleMania 33 to film a new movie.
The 15-time WWE world champion recently returned from a three-month absence and immediately challenged A.J. Styles for the WWE title at the Royal Rumble. However, one of the main topics during their promos was Cena's status as a part-time superstar.
It should be noted that Cena missed the majority of 2016 due to injuries and outside projects such as his TV show on FOX. He also hosted several awards shows like the ESPYS and the Teen Choice Awards. He also became the third WWE superstar to host "Saturday Night Live."
According to Corey Jacobs of WrestlingNews.co, Cena is set to star in the movie titled "The Pact" alongside Leslie Mann and Ike Barinholtz. The film will be released on April 20, 2018, which means it is going to start filming soon.
The report noted that filming might start right after WrestleMania 33 which means Cena will mist a significant amount of time. He is also getting a lot offers for movies and TV shows, and it seems like he'll officially become a part-timer.
Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer (subscription required) noted in his latest report that the WWE is changing its plans for WrestleMania 33 because of Cena. The 39-year-old superstar is supposed to face The Undertaker but the company is reportedly heading into a different direction.
As of this writing, Cena is scheduled to face Styles at the Royal Rumble for the WWE championship. Even though he'll likely win his 16th WWE world title, there is a chance that the WWE goes a different direction since it does not make any sense if the title is held by someone who will be gone for a while.
Nevertheless, the only thing that is sure at the moment is Cena's time as a full-time superstar is coming to a close.
