Dean Ambrose is currently in his second reign as the Intercontinental champion. He is set to participate in the Elimination Chamber Match for the WWE championship but he is not expected to come out as the winner.
It means Ambrose will have a new program for the Intercontinental title heading into WrestleMania 33. However, there are no concrete plans for him since his next opponent is dependent on Seth Rollins' knee injury.
According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer (subscription required), the currently plan for Ambrose is for him to defend his Intercontinental championship against A.J. Styles at WrestleMania 33. There were no real plans for Ambrose since Styles was scheduled to face Shane McMahon.
However, the injury to Rollins led to WWE coming up with several backup options just in case he is ruled out of WrestleMania 33. Shane is now linked to a match with Triple H, who was supposed to face Rollins at the biggest event of the year.
It leaves Styles without a match and he cannot be inserted back into the WWE championship picture. Bray Wyatt is expected to win the WWE title at Elimination Chamber and face Randy Orton, who won the Royal Rumble Match, at WrestleMania 33.
If Ambrose vs. Styles for the Intercontinental championship happens at WrestleMania 33, it will be the first one-on-one Intercontinental title match at the WrestleMania main card since 2012, per Sportskeeda. The last two Intercontinental title matches were multi-person Ladder Matches.
The WWE gave Ambrose the Intercontinental championship to continue to build its prestige after The Miz elevated it with his very impressive run last year. The prestige of the title will only get bigger if Ambrose defends it against Styles
"The Phenomenal One" had one of the greatest rookie years in WWE history. He is also considered by many as the best wrestler in the world at the moment. A feud for the IC title between the two superstars will elevate the title to even bigger heights.
The only downside of the match is Styles deserves better than the Intercontinental championship. He should be in the WWE title picture for all the things he had done on SmackDown Live. He also could have been the opponent of The Undertaker rather at WrestleMania 33 rather than Roman Reigns.
Other possible plans for the Intercontinental championship include a Fatal 4-Way Match involving The Miz and Baron Corbin. Dolph Ziggler and Apollo Crews could also be added and make it a six-man Ladder Match.
