Netflix's has again pulled off a drama to watch out after successfully debuting with "The Crown" in 2016. In the next season, the life of Liz (Claire Foy) as the mother of Prince Andrew and Prince Edward will be in focus. Prince Phillip's (Matt Smith) journey abroad will also be the center of attention as he leaves his family for four months.
Season 2 will likely air in the same month where its premiere season first graced TV screens. By November this year, "The Crown" opens fans again to the life of Queen Elizabeth II, Digital Spy has learned.
The same publication took note that majority of characters will be returning except for John Lithgow who portrayed the role of Winston Churchill in season 1. Lithgow will be replaced by Anthony Eden after the former's character resigned as prime minister in the first season.
Since season 1 covered the events that happened between 1947 to 1955 including Elizabeth's marriage to Phillip, and Princess Margaret's (Vanessa Kirby) engagement to Peter Townsend, the upcoming installment will most likely feature Liz's motherhood.
Mother to both Prince Andrew and Edward, the queen's experiences not only as a mother but as a wife will be tested as her husband Prince Phillip leaves home to open the Sydney Olympics. While Phillip is out of the country for four months, the couple will be surrounded by rumors of marital problems.
Aside from Phillip and Liz, Margaret and Lord Snowden's (Matthew Goode) relationship is also put to test due to personality differences. Kirby told Vanity Fair during an interview that the difference between her and Snowden's experience would cause friction between them.
Their contrast in personality would also create issues between the couple as claimed by Kirby. "You see these two worlds collide - her's and Tony's, who is a member of the public and was a creative, liberal, dark horse. Meanwhile, she is this epitome of the establishment," the 28-year old actress elaborated.
"The Crown" season 2 is expected to run a total of 10 one-hour episode when it returns to Netflix this year. The entire reign of Queen Elizabeth II would be covered in just six seasons, and series writer Peter Morgan already revealed time jump will be applied in between seasons.
