YouTuber Pewdiepie anti-Semitic joke has gained criticisms instead of pure laughter. In the aftermath, YouTube, Disney and other sponsor have distanced themselves from the world's highest-paid YouTube star.
Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, known online as PewDiePie, has amassed online success over his six-year career online. However, with the latest issue associated with him and his video channel, his future as an online star may be uncertain. YouTube has removed Kjellberg from its Google Preferred program, while Disney simply cut ties with him by severing Kjellberg affiliation with Maker Studios.
"We've decided to cancel the release of Scare PewDiePie Season 2 and we're removing the PewDiePie channel from Google Preferred," a YouTube spokesperson told Forbes.
With the severing of ties with major sponsors and partners, the earnings of Kjellberg will surely drop significantly, especially that he have been enjoying at least a six-figure paycheck from his principal partners. The primary ads and promotions that helped Kjellberg achieve $15 million last year have been removed, emphasizing the negative effects of his actions online.
This was not the first instance that a fascist-inspired humor has been aired by Kjellberg. There were other videos featuring anti-Semitic comments or Nazi imagery that the famous YouTuber posted online, according to the Wall Street Journal.
In his most recent antic, Kjellberg's video included pain men to display a sign reading "Death to All Jews." In a separately uploaded video, a man portraying Christ was also depicted saying "Hitler did nothing wrong." As a response to the criticism and comments online, the YouTube star removed three of the nine videos that are being scrutinized.
Despite the negative comments and sanctions being given Kjellberg and his YouTube channel, he still explained that such thing was a joke. He cleared out that he was merely trying to showcase online how crazy the modern world could be.
