A shaming method used during the Cultural Revolution in China for class enemies continue to be employed by Sichuan authorities. They applied the shaming method of having a suspect wear a sign that admits to being a law breaker.
Embarrassing Sign
Shanghaiist reported that a 40-year-old woman caught by neighborhood security last week trying to steal an electric scooter in Nachong City, Sichuan Province, was detained until the arrival of police. However, the female suspect was made to wear a sign that stated: “I am a thief.”
The report did not identify who forced the woman to wear the degrading sign. According to legal experts from China, her public humiliation was wrong even if she was caught red-handed for a crime she committed. The experts say the woman deserve to face the consequence of her act through a court of law.
But a number of Chinese netizens believe she deserves that kind of punishment. One commenter agrees that forcing a person to wear a sign is humiliating. However, the commenter added that thieves are not persons.
Kung Fu Trucker
Besides the female electric scooter thief-suspect, even a rat was not spared wearing an embarrassing sign in January after the pest was caught stealing rice from a shop.
In December, a thief on a motor bike tried to steal the mobile phone of a truck driver who was passing through Guangdong. Unfortunately for the mobile phone snatcher, the owner of the gadget is also a kung fu master who confronted the stealer and leapt up the moped headed in his direction, cleared the handlebars and hit the thief on the chest using flying kick, Daily Mail reported.
After the thief crashed to the ground, the kung fu trucker hit him again on the shoulder which caused the man to fall again. The trucker allows the thief to get up again, but the scooter’s weight made him fall again. The thief eventually returned the stolen phone to the truck driver.
