A student at East High School in Colorado is currently at large after allegedly shooting two faculty members on Wednesday, leaving both injured, according to officials.

During a press conference, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock confirmed that the incident occurred at East High School and involved a student targeting two staff members. Denver Westworld reported that paramedics were already on-site due to a prior call for a person experiencing an allergic reaction who required hospitalization.

KMGH-TV reported that the police chief stated that faculty had discovered a gun on a student earlier that morning, prompting the student to shoot the two faculty members in response.

The Denver Police Department announced via Twitter that officers had responded to the shooting at East High School just after 10 a.m. local time on Wednesday. In a subsequent tweet, the department revealed that "two adult victims have been located and transported to area hospitals," adding that the suspect was believed to have fled the scene. ATF Denver confirmed their presence at the scene with a tweet.

Denver Public Schools (DPS) later disclosed that "two adult faculty members have been transported to area hospitals." The school is planning a "controlled release" of students once the Denver Police Department grants permission. To help students return home, DPS is working with the Regional Transportation District to increase the number of buses on the 15 line.

Initially, the district had tweeted that a lockdown was in effect, with all students remaining in their third-period classrooms.

Parents will be allowed to collect their children at 17th and Esplanade once police clearance is given. The district also mentioned that "students who drove will be escorted to their cars in the parking lot & can leave. Students who ride the bus will be held until their bus arrives."
