We can have pizza, newspapers and socks regularly delivered to our homes-so why not coffee? Starbucks will team up with delivery startup Postmates later this year, to test various delivery service options. The tests will include deliveries to Seattle homes and offices in a famous NYC skyscraper.
Starbucks made an announcement on Wednesday that will be launching two pilot tests. That will happen during the second half of 2015.
The first test, which will be launched in Seattle, will work in tandem with Postmates. Customers can use the Starbucks mobile app to get beverages and pastries delivered to their doorsteps, via the startup company.
Postmates stated in a blog post that the partnership between the companies supports its vision to power local "on-demand logistics" to customers and businesses "all over the world."
Meanwhile, the second test will occur in the Empire State Building, located in Manhattan, according to Mashable. Starbucks employees will deliver orders from a store inside the skyscraper, to customers working in the same structure.
Starbucks customers in the NYC skyscraper will also be able to use the Starbucks app to track their beverage or food. However, only members of the coffee company's loyalty program will be able to use it, according to Time.
Starbucks would benefit on-the-go customers who simply do not have time to wait in lines. In addition, a delivery service would help to continue the history of the company's innovations in mobile apps and mobile payments.
One key problem that Starbucks must tackle will be how to keep coffees and food warm until they are delivered to customers' doorsteps. Who would want an "iced" beverage that is supposed to be piping hot?
