Joe and Anthony Russo's "Captain America: Civil War" marks history as the first film shot using IMAX's new 2D digital camera.
Joe Russo said that a sequence with an implausible degree will be shot using the cameras, as per Variety. The said sequence will comprise about 15 minutes of the film.
The film helmer said that he and the production team are aim to improve storytelling by being on the "cutting edge" of technology. Using the new cameras in shooting the film helps them drive the movie more creatively. For the director, there is a "sense of showmanship" that sticks to the films when one is working on a Marvel movie.
The new cameras are products of the partnership between IMAX and Arri Group, a German motion picture company and the largest global supplier of motion film equipment.
Due to the fact that the number of films shot digitally is increasing, IMAX has decided to produce the new technology in addition to its current 3D digital camera and 2D film camera. The big screen company views the new technology as an accompaniment and not a replacement to their existing 2D film cameras.
"Captain America: Civil War" will be shot in 2D and then will be converted to 3D during post-production, just like Joe Johnston's "Captain America: The First Avenger" and Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity."
IMAX has limited the access of its cameras to A-list blockbusters such as Brad Bird's "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar," J.J. Abrams' "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," and Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice."
IMAX CEO Greg Foster explained that the demand for their cameras before is not as high as today, having them control the supply in a calculated way. Now, the increased demand for their cameras led to a "supply/demand issue," which is resolved by their new technology.
The special IMAX sequence is still unknown, leading to speculations, as per Cinema Blend. It can be the head-on battle between Captain America and Iron Man in the city streets of New York.
The sequence can also be one that is parallel with the events in the "Civil War" comics. An example is the fight between a group of inexperienced superheroes and a team of villains, which led to death of more than 600 civilians.
"Captain America: Civil War" is to commence with its production, collaborating a number of heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe such as Black Panther and possibly, Spider-Man.
The film will star Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Chadwick Boseman, and Sebastian Stan. Directed by the Russos, the film is to be penned by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFreely.
"Captain America: Civil War" is slated to premiere in theaters on May 6, 2016.
