Police in Pennsylvania are investigating how the tombstone of Hillary Clinton's father, Hugh Rodham, got toppled at the Washburn Street Cemetery earlier this week.
According to local sources, the vandalized tombstone was discovered on Monday afternoon by the caretaker of the cemetery, Paul McGloin, who has been entrusted with caring for the tombstone of Hillary Clinton's father since he was interred in 1993.
"I pass here five, six times a day because I live two blocks from here and when I looked I couldn't believe it, to see that it was tipped over," he said. According to McGloin, this is the first time that something like this has happened to Hillary Clinton's father's tombstone.
There are speculations that the tombstone of the late Hugh Rodham may have been vandalized by opponents of Hilary Clinton in order to express their displeasure that she will be in the race for the 2016 presidential elections.
There is no evidence to show that the tombstone was toppled before Clinton announced that she will run for president on Sunday.
"I hope this has nothing to do with politics, because that's just wrong," McGloin said.
The Police Chief of Scranton Carl Graziano told The Times-Tribune, "I'm not sure how else it would have fallen over."
Interestingly, if the tumbling of Rodham's tombstone is meant to send a message, it is clearly for Clinton and not the Democrat Party. Clinton's father, who was into textile making, was a staunch supporter of the Republican Party, according to the Daily Mail.
Even after the former First Lady married Bill Clinton who later won the presidential elections, Rodham never withdrew his support for the Republican Party. He died only a few months into his son-in-law's tenure as president after suffering from a stroke.
Scranton police said a mentally ill man was found at the Washburn Street Cemetery on Monday. However, at this moment, it is unclear if he had anything to do with the toppling of Rodham's tombstone. Reports indicate that by April 14, Tuesday, the tombstone had been fixed upright once again.
