Tech company Philips recently released a LED bulb that only costs $4.97. Philips is also planning to release the bulbs in a 3-month promotional offer wherein customers can buy two bulbs for the price of one.
According to Wired, this breakthrough product from Philips could be the final puzzle in persuading house owners to convert into cheaper and energy efficient devices. The new Philips LED bulb will go on sale at Home Depot starting May and has a rated lifespan of ten years.
One of the biggest factor that affects the sale and marketability of LED lights is that it costs more compared to ordinary incandescent bulbs. When first introduced about three years ago, a standard LED bulb costs at least $30. Despite the LED bulbs longer lifespan and brighter light, many consumers deemed that it's not a practical alternative to the cheaper incandescent.
According to CNet, the new Philips 60W LED lights scored a Lumen rating of 800 and an overall efficiency of 90/100. When used at an average of three hours per day, the yearly energy cost of the Philips 60W LED lights is as low as $1.02. It has an operational lifespan of 11,000 hours.
The Philips 60W LED lights will available in two color temperatures; 2700k and 5000k.
For interested buyers who can't wait until the Home Depot release on May, the LED bulb is already available for online purchase at Philips' website. Philips will also release it in Canada, but without the 2-for-1 pricing which is only available in the US market.
