In an exclusive interview with Xinhua, Chinese novelist Cang Yue unveiled plans to adapt her epic fantasy “The Mirror” book series to the big screen.
"I finished this book eight years ago, and from the beginning I had the idea to adapt the story of the books into a movie, but at that time the visual effects technology were not good enough like today," Cang shared with Xinhua during the presentation of "The Mirror: Twin Cities" at the 68th Cannes Film Festival.
With the development of CGI and greater visual effects technology, Cang's dreams are coming true.
"The Mirror's" film adaptation will be a product of Chinese and Canadian creative teams and visionaries. Andrew Mason ("The Matrix"), Danny Bergeron ("X-Men: Days of Future Past"), and Liming Ke ("So Young") are all on board to make the popular book series a successful film franchise.
"I'm very satisfied with the team and about this China-Canada co-production. I would like to have in the film very high-quality visual effects and I would like to reach the Hollywood top level."
An epic tale of love, war and magic, "The Mirror" takes place in the fantastical world of Eden, where powerful sorcery govern everyday life. With its cast of complex characters and thrilling quests, the book series has sold more than seven million copies.
"We want to create a Chinese Lord of the Rings. There are two rings in the story and the origin of the book comes from there," said Cang.
While it's still a work in progress, "The Mirror" will be developed for the international market. Cang Yue is optimistic that foreign audiences will find the story relatable and compelling.
"Even if we have a different culture, I would like to use this oriental style of love and emotion among characters and to touch western people's hearts."
