Uniqlo faces controversy after an alleged sex video inside one of its fitting rooms leaked online on Tuesday. It was first posted on WeChat and then Weibo in the evening of July 14.
The one-minute video showed a young Chinese couple "getting down to business" while piped music played in the background inside Uniqlo’s store at Sanlitun in Beijing.
The man, who was dressed in black from head to toe, was whispering words like “call me husband” and “say we’ll be together,” while asking the woman to kiss him.
Before the video ends, another female voice from the background can be heard saying: “Dear customers, welcome to the Uniqlo store at Sanlitun. There are no fitting rooms on the first floor. Please proceed to the second and third floor if you need to try clothes on."
The viral video circulated all over social media on Tuesday. However, most posts regarding the clip had been taken down by Wednesday.
After the video attracted millions of views and comments online, some Chinese Internet users mused that it was part of Uniqlo’s marketing ploy.
The international brand quickly responded to the allegations, saying that they are dedicated to providing consumers with safe, comfortable and quality shopping experiences and locations.
"We would like to remind all customers to abide by society's moral standard . . . and properly and appropriately use our fitting rooms,” said the company in its official response on July 15.
According to a Chinese news media, the police are now looking into the incident after Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau received several reports from people online.
Meanwhile, a WeChat chat log suggested that the woman and the man showed in the video were not dating and that it was their first encounter.
