With Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim 2" hitting the big screen two years from now, he has revealed that the upcoming sequel has the working title "Maelstorm" and filming will commence in Nov. 2015.
The director said that the shooting for the sequel will take place mainly at Pinewood Toronto Studios about four months from now, as per Global News.
Maelstorm refers to a very large and strong whirlpool and this suggests that the film will feature a disordered state and events. According to Screen Rant, Maelstorm would be a perfect fit for the film's subtitle, as this has been observed as a trend when it comes to film titles.
With an operations budget of about $200 million, its 2013 predecessor "Pacific Rim" was also filmed in Toronto from Nov. 2011 to Apr. 2012. After its release in July 2013, "Pacific Rim" made an estimated international gross of $411 million.
"Pacific Rim 2: Maelstorm" is set a few years following the events in 2013's "Pacific Rim" and will focus on Kaiju monsters that rise from a gateway at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. It has been reported that Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, and Rinko Kikuchi will reprise their roles. Other fine points, such as the members of the cast and exact plot details have yet to be announced.
With del Toro set to helm the film, Travis Beacham and Zak Penn are also on board to pen the film script. The film will be produced by Callum Grreene, Jon Jashni, Mary Parent, Jillian Share, and Thomas Tull, among others.
"Pacific Rim 2: Maelstorm" is slated to premiere in theaters in the United States on Aug. 4, 2017.
