The highly anticipated “Doctor Who” Season 9 will feature “Game of Thrones’” Maisie Williams not as a returning character from the Doctor’s past, but as a new character with a significant importance.
Dismissing all the speculations of what is Williams’ role in the upcoming season, “Doctor Who” executive producer Steven Moffat has revealed that the said character is not a returning character.
“Once you see what she’s up to you’ll appreciate what a clever idea [the role] was. It’s a significant role, we’re not just throwing her away. It’s a great part and she’s terrific in it,” Moffat said in a event, as reported by Associated Press.
“One thing I think is worth saying, because it keeps coming up as an issue, is that she is not playing a returning character. She’s a new character, she’s not a character from the Doctor’s past,” he added, while teasing fans about what the show has in store for them.
Given the hint of familiarity between Williams and the Doctor in the “Doctor Who” Season 9 trailer, Williams was speculated to play the role of a young Missy, or Doctor’s granddaughter Susan or even his daughter Jenny, who he thinks died in Season 4. However, Moffat has made it crystal clear that Williams is not playing the role of Susan or Doctor’s daughter in the season, in his response to USA Today.
Nevertheless, the Whovians (fans of “Doctor Who”) are not likely buying it as they feel it is the EP’s trick to divert attention.
“Last year, when Missy was vaporized, he told us that Missy had died, and the same was true for Osgood and now we have season 9 where there will be both Missy and Osgood, then it’s clear that in the midst of many information and spoilers, there is something fake put there specifically to divert our attention,” commented Hirmien on Doctor Who TV.
