Pudong, a district of Shanghai, is seen as China's next shipping and air transport hub with the construction of the China Ocean Plaza at the urban center, Lujiazui.
The project, as reported by the Pudong Times, is initiated by the China Shipping Company.
The building is eyed to be a symbol of Pudong and Shanghai's reputation as a global international shipping center. Occupying an area of 9,000 square meters, the plaza, when completed, will be a landmark on Huangpu River's east bank.
The endeavor also covers the establishment of an open dock theme park, which will feature Shanghai shipping industry's oldest heritage site, Dongjiadu Shipyard.
The China Ocean Plaza is a culminating edifice of the shipping industry's focus to integrate charity activities, water entertainment and shipping culture.
Apart from the plaza, Sinotrans and CSC Holdings Co., the shipping department of another leading group, will also be set up in the district. The group is currently handling its registration formalities in the area. Its operations are expected to start by the end of next month.
Pudong is also strategically cooperating with one of the leading state-controlled air transport firms, China Eastern Airlines. This is part of the district's efforts to advance development in its air transport industry.
After the establishment of the Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone, Pudong has been standing on a new point of growth, prioritizing the district's development quality, institution streamlining and functions upgrade.
The district eyes to have its GDP growth increase by 1 or 2 percentage points higher than the average in Shanghai before the end of 2015. Its officials rely on its tertiary industry to account 65 percent of its local domestic product growth.
