Sammi Cheng is back doing what she truly excels at: performing.
Following up her 2009-2011 “Love Mi” concert tour, Cheng is stirring up the music scene once more through “Touch Mi.”
The “Touch Mi World Tour” kicked off in Hong Kong (Dec. 20-22, 24-28 and 30-31, 2014; and Jan. 1-2, 2015). Cheng then proceeded to perform in Malaysia (April 24-25), Macau (May 15-16) and Singapore (Aug. 1).
Donning several eye-catching outfits from a sheer long gown to a futuristic ensemble, not to mention the hip headdress, face mask and wig she alternately wore, Cheng wowed the audience together with her similarly fab-looking backup dancers.
Of course, people went for her singing prowess and Cheng didn’t disappoint. She performed some of her hits and even made her own rendition of Taiwanese singer A-Mei’s “Ji De” and Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”
Cheng is now a born-again Christian. Her 2009 "Faith" album centers on Christian music.
Back in the ‘90s, Cheng was hailed by the Hong Kong media as Canto-pop Queen. She started singing professionally in 1988 after landing a record deal with Hong Kong–based record label Capital Artists. The then 16-year-old student had to balance her studies and new-found career.
Her sweet and funny portrayal of roles in rom-com movies prompted the media to dub Cheng as the Meg Ryan of Hong Kong. American actress-film producer Ryan became famous doing such roles in the ‘90s, which made Hollywood reporters to brand her as America’s Sweetheart.
Cheng’s first foray into acting was via Herman Yau’s 1992 action flick “Best of the Best,” where she starred opposite Jacky Cheung. She was last seen in the big screen in Matt Chow and Wilson Yip’s romantic drama, “Triumph in the Skies,” shown in February.
Cheng appeared in more than 20 films and worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, such as Stephen Chow, Andy Lau and Richie Ren. She was proclaimed Best Actress by the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Award for her role in Johnnie To and Wai Ka-Fai’s 2001 comedy “Wu Yen,” where she co-starred with Anita Mui (1963-2003).
She will be seen in Liu Guonan’s upcoming movie, “Marriage Contract,” opposite award-winning Taiwanese actor Joseph Chang.
A marriage contract is something Cheng signed in real life back in 2013.
Turning 43 this Aug. 19, the Hong Kong native is married to singer-actor Andy Hui, who will be celebrating his 48th birthday this Aug. 12. Aside from being born in the same month, another thing these two artists have in common is they both joined TVB8 International Chinese New Talent Singing Championship, which was initially called New Talent Singing Awards in the ‘80s. Cheng placed third in 1988 and Hui was the first runner-up in 1986.
Details regarding dates and venues for her “Touch Mi” concert in Guangzhou are yet to be announced.
