It was barely two months ago when 54-year-old English coach Steve McClaren was hired by Newcastle United FC and he is now making what seems to be the right moves for the future of the middling organization.
Just recently, the team signed 19-year-old forward Ivan Toney from Northampton Town FC, the team's fifth signing of the summer, at an undisclosed amount. The young forward had already played three seasons for the League Two club and scored 13 goals in 60 appearances as a senior, according to BBC Sport.
This shows a lot of promise, especially for McClaren who reportedly admitted that his team needs more firepower to be able to compete to more powerful teams of the Premier League.
Newcastle will be opening their 2015-2016 season against Southampton FC on Sunday, but there are no indications that McClaren will use Toney that day.
Meanwhile, football development manager Peter Beardsley was enthralled by what he had seen so far from the boy saying that "he is a very good player, with great enthusiasm and a first-class attitude, and has all the attributes to have a bright future at the club."
The Guardian indicated that aside from Toney, other new recruits that McClaren is eager to test on actual competition are midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum from PSV Eindhoven, and defender Chancel Mbemba and striker Aleksandar Mitrovic from RSC Anderlecht.
"Being a young lad who is scoring goals in the Football League was a great thing," said Toney. "Now I want to progress here and eventually do it in the Premier League."
