To see is to believe, or so they say.
With pregnancy rumors hounding her and not issuing a statement about them, lo and behold, Zhang Ziyi attended a press conference for Wei Nan and Wei Min’s sci-fi comedy “The Baby from Universe” on Aug. 4 looking very much like any normal pregnant woman.
Yes, Zhang shows off a bump as she faced the media and the public, but, alas, it’s only prosthetics. Her co-star Jiang Wen also wore the same prosthetics and went on stage “pregnant.”
Rumors initially sparked when a picture of the actress surfaced in March where she appeared to be pregnant. In the picture, Zhang was posing together with some of the film’s cast and with a noticeable bump.
Showing in December, “The Baby from Universe” also stars Golden Horse award-winning actress Li Xiaolu, aka Jacqueline Li (“Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl”); Chen Xuedong, aka Cheney Chen (“Tiny Times” series); and South Korean-Chinese boy band EXO’s Lay, aka Zhang Yixing.
Executive producer Guo Jingming, the writer and director of the blockbuster “Tiny Times” series, has Zhang as co-producer. This is the third film she produced.
The first one was the 2009 Chinese-Korean rom-com “Sophie’s Revenge,” written and directed by Eva Jin, where she won Most Popular Actress from China Student Film Awards. It was followed by American film and TV director Dennie Gordon’s 2013 romantic adventure flick “My Lucky Star,” where she played a lead role.
One of the hailed Four Dan Actresses, she was last seen in John Woo’s 2014 drama “The Crossing” with Taiwanese-Japanese actor and singer Takeshi Kaneshiro and South Korean actress Song Hye-kyo. She can again be seen in another drama in Cheng Er’s “The Wasted Times” to be shown in October.
Zhang, 36, is now engaged with singer-songwriter Wang Feng, 44.
The two kept mum about their relationship for a long time. The Beijing rock star publicly announced his love for Zhang during his concert at the Shanghai Stadium on Nov. 9, 2013.
Wang proposed to her in February during her birthday party. He bent down in one knee and presented a 9.15-carat diamond ring, which was delivered by a drone.
The lead vocals of rock band No. 43 Baojia Street had a string of failed marriages: first, with TV presenter Qi Dan; second, with model Ge Huijie; and third, with Kang Zuoru. He has a daughter with Ge and Kang.
Ziyi was never married but once got engaged with Israeli billionaire Aviv "Vivi" Nevo in 2008. No wedding ever took place, and the two went their separate ways in 2010.
She also dated renowned Chinese director Zhang Yimou, South Korean actor Jung Woo-sung, American director-producer Brett Ratner (Jackie Chan’s “Rush Hour” series), Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan, vice president of the Fok Ying Tung Group and president of the Hong Kong Miniature Football Association Eric Fok, and award-winning TV host Sa Beining.
For now, people can see a pregnant Zhang Ziyi only in a movie.
