With the no.2 seed in the US Open championship on the line, Roger Federer and Andy Murray will treat Saturday's semifinal affair at the Cincinnati Masters as a make-or-break duel, paving the way for potentially another classic battle between two top-notch netters.
Despite skipping the Rogers Cup tourney in Montreal, Federer never missed a beat on the tennis court as he opened his US hard-court season campaign with three consecutive straight-set wins over testy competitions.
But just what everybody were anticipating at the start of the tournament, waiting for Federer in the semifinals is a familiar face in Murray, who is coming off a big win over Novak Djokovic in a thrilling three-set final (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) at Rogers Cup.
Federer currently has a 13-11 head-to-head advantage over Andy Murray (via Match Stats), winning their last four matches - including their recent semis clash at the Wimbledon Open. Last year, the Swiss also triumphed over Murray 6-3 7-5 in the quarterfinal of the Cincinnati Masters.
Still, it's hard to bet against Murray right now. Many tennis followers and pundits alike believed the two-time Grand Slam winner is playing his best game on the US hard-court since capturing his maiden major trophy in the 2012 US Open Championship, making this match a lot harder for the ageless Swiss.
In the other men's semis match, world's no.1 Novak Djokovic will attempt to punch his way to the championship match as he faces Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov.
After succumbing to pressure against Murray, Djokovic has kept his temper in check so far in Cincinnati. He's fresh from a 6-4, 6-1 win over French Open conqueror Stanislas Wawrinka and will have 4-0 head-to-head advantage over Dolgopolov entering their match. On the other hand, the Ukrainian national will be rallying from his 6-4 6-2 upset win against perennial top-10 player Tomas Berdych.
